Proper Way To Lead a Horse

1. Horse should walk to your right side with head to your side or slightly behind you.
2. Your right hand on the lead shank should be placed about two feet from horses jaw.
3. The tension on the lead shank lets you know what the horse is doing.
4. The remainder of the lead should be coiled in your left hand.

When the horse is on the right side, opportunities for you to be stepped on
are eliminated. If your horse should spook or bolt, you can let go with your
right hand near the horse's jaw and hold the horse with both hands on the
extended lead shank.

Cinchy Horses - When you have a cinchy horse, never immediately tighten the cinch. Cinch it loosely while you do something else(pick the feet, brush the tail etc.) to keep your horse from anticipating a tightened cinch. Then tighten it until it just touches the horses belly and walk your horse out for several steps, tighten a few more notches and walk a few more steps. Stay consistent with this process and your horse will gradually learn to accept being cinched.

Using baby powder under your saddle pad well help keep your horses back to stay cool and comfortable. Also use baby powder on the inside of your horses boots, and for those of you who haven't ridden this past winter try using a little on your seat before your next ride...
