Sunset Ride

Experience the beauty of the Blue Ridge mountains as the golden light of sunset transforms the landscape. The day fades into evening on our signature 1 1/2 hr. sunset ride. Watch the sky fill with vibrant colors while you enjoy the tranquility that makes this ride one of the most popular and memorable rides at Mountaintop Ranch. This ride is perfect for couples, family, and friends wanting to experience a Blue Ridge Mountain sunset from horseback.

Around the Ranch Ride

The Around the Ranch Ride is a complete experience of riding over the entire 400 acre mountain property. This guided horseback Ride is perfect for couples and families looking to enjoy a peaceful ride through the heart of the Ranch covering many different types of terrain. Leaving at 11 AM, this 3-4 hour ride explores beautiful wooded trails and creek crossings covering 400 acres of mountainous terrain. Riders will break for lunch at the picturesque main cabin overlooking Skyline Drive. They will be served a BBQ picnic lunch on a rustic covered porch or under a covered pavilion while enjoying our high mountain meadow pond. After lunch, riders will remount their horse and follow the spectacular rock outcrop formation trail. This leads to a 3,300 ft. long ridge overlook of the Shenandoah National Park. Come experience the simple pleasure of horseback riding and discover why so many guests return to ride with us again and again.

Ride and Hike Excursion
Waterfalls hike and swim, BBQ and horseback experience

This all-day excursion is a memory you will not forget! The day starts at 10 AM with a guided tour down our privately owned trails to a spectacular 40 foot and 60 foot waterfall that run from the Shenandoah National Park into Naked Creek. Once at the falls, you will have ample time to explore, photograph, and spend time in the deep swimming hole at the bottom of one of the falls. This is a steep hike down, but as you hike out of the national park, we provide transportation back up the mountain road so there is no steep uphill hiking. After returning from the hike, guests are invited over to our main cabin where you will be served a BBQ picnic lunch on a rustic covered porch or a covered pavilion while enjoying our high mountain meadow pond. Following lunch, you will meet your horse at the equine center and enjoy a relaxing, guided ride on the opposite side of the mountains through beautiful forests and picturesque trails. By hiking the one side and riding the other, you'll discover the best of the mountain in a truly unique and memorable adventure. This signature Mountaintop Ranch excursion offers an exceptional combination of exclusive waterfall access, spectacular Blue Ridge Mountain scenery, delicious ranch-style BBQ, and horseback riding - all in one unforgettable day.

Your waterfall hike is led by Shannon Wyant, a lifelong Appalachian native from the historic community of Jollett Hollow. With deep family roots that span generations in these mountains, Shannon offers far more than a guided hike - he shares the stories, traditions, and rich heritage of Appalacia that have been passed down through his family for decades.
As you make you way along the trail, Shannon brings the mountains to life with fascinating local history, colorful folklore, and personal stories that connect guests to the people and culture of this remarkable region. His knowledge of the land, warm personality, and genuine love for Appalacia make the journey to the waterfalls as memorable as the destination itself.
For many guests, time spent with Shannon becomes one of the highlights of their visit, adding an authentic and unforgettable dimension to the Mountaintop Ranch experience.
Ride Details and What to Expect

​All riders MUST wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.

To ensure the safety of our guests and horses, all rides are conducted at a walk, with opportunities to trot on appropriate sections of the trail for riders with previous experience. While many of our trails are well suited to experienced riders, cantering or galloping in not permitted on any of our guided trail rides.

All reservations need to be made at least 24 hours in advance.

We specialize in small groups, 10-12 guests or less (ride minimum is 2 guests)​

Groups of 8 or more, private rides, and those booking multiple activities will be charged an automatic 20% gratuity (to be split between your guides if multiple are necessary)​​​
Cancellation Policy

In the event of inclement weather, we will issue a full refund if rescheduling is not an option. Aside from inclement weather, we do not offer any other cancellation policy for a refund. We are, however, happy to reschedule with you if possible.
*Mountaintop Ranch reserves the right to cancel due to inclement weather, although a little bit of rain never hurt anyone. We advise you check the weather day of and dress accordingly. Some rides might not always be available due to trail conditions, the number of guests we have with us on the ranch and the number of horses we have available, or other unforeseen reasons. Please check with the hostess of Mountaintop Ranch before making your final plans to ensure a smooth ride.
